New Avantasia song available online

A brand new song from the new Avantasia album has just been posted at TobiasSammet.com. It is a shorter version (radio edit) of the first track of the album called “Dying For An Angel“. Musicians on this track include Klaus Meine and Tobias Sammet on vocals, Tobias on bass, Sasha Paeth on guitars and Eric Singer on drums.

Axel Rudi Pell for the first time in the Czech Republic

As it was already mentioned, Axel Rudi Pell starts a new tour in May this year. First announced dates (see below) include mostly Germany, but one of the appearances is at Masters of Rock festival in the Czech Republic. It is Axel’s first visit of this country and it seems the drummer Mike Terrana will be really busy that day! Mike will be drumming four performances in a row at the festival. Besides Axel Rudi Pell’s set, he will be drumming also Masterplan’s and Tarja’s set, plus his own solo drum clinic! Last time Mike had his solo set at Masters of Rock festival in 2006, the performance was a big success. So don’t miss it!

Since very first year in 2003, Masters of Rock festival is located in the Rudolf Jelinek Destillery in Vizovice, Czech Republic. Originally two days long festival with mostly local bands nowadays consists of 4 days full of hard & heavy music from all over the world. Other bands confirmed for this year so far include Manowar, Accept, Doro, Annihilator, Quuensrÿche, Masterplan, Epica, Primal Fear, Destruction… For more information about the festival check their website www.mastersofrock.cz.

Edguy to support Scorpions in Germany

Edguy will be one of the last musicians sharing the stage with German legendary rock band Scorpions. Scorpions recently announced the end of their career. But before they ultimately leave the world’s stages, the band will release its last album called “Sting in the Tail” and set off to a farewell tour “Get your Sting and Blackout – Scorpions World Tour 2010″ at late spring. Edguy will accompany them on several German dates. Those are as follows:

Tokio Hotel gets EMMA award in Finland

Tokio Hotel has just received EMMA award for “International Act of the Year” (Vuoden ulkomainen artisti) in Finland. EMMAs are awarded annually since 1983 and the winners are chosen by music critics. The awards for 2009 were announced at Emma Gaala ceremony in Helsinki’s Peacock-teatteri on Thursday, February 4. Other nominees in the international category included Alexander Rybak, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Muse, Paramore, Pink, Rammstein, Robbie Williams and The Baseballs. Whole ceremony including a humorous announcement of Tokio Hotel “National Act of the Year” can be found at YLE TV (in Finnish only) within 30 days following the ceremony.

While the band is finishing a new record, release date of Axel Rudi Pell’s new DVD is approaching. The video recorded at last year’s German ROCK OF AGES festival will come out on February 19 in Germany, and three days later, on February 22, in the rest of the world. “ONE NIGHT LIVE – Live at the Rock Of Ages Festival 2009″ will include the band’s 75 minutes performance in Seebronn exactly as it happened, as Axel says: “with all the mistakes and blue notes. But that’s Liv(f)e!!!”.

Avantasia updates: Jon Oliva in, artwork out!

Another musician participating in new Avantasia has just been announced. This time he is no one less important than JON OLIVA, the man behind legendary American progressive band SAVATAGE, his solo band JON OLIVA’S PAIN and last but not least TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, a highly successful project especially in the North America. According to Tobias Sammet, Jon will appear in one song only – “Death Is Just A Feeling”, a song that allegedly could be “a perfect chapter in a horror musical”. I guess Jon’s fans can easily imagine it!

In addition to the guest musician, the artwork of both “The Wicked Symphony” and “Angel of Babylon” discs has also been revealed. Its author is Thomas Ewerhard, the man who is also responsible among others for Edguy’s “Hellfire Club” and Avantasia’s last album “The Scarecrow”.

New Avantasia double disc will be available in regular edition, one box deluxe edition and 2LP editions on April 3. Any of them can be already pre-ordered at Nuclear Blast Online Shop.

Female singer for Avantasia announced

After two female singers on Avantasia – Sharon del Adel (on “Avantasia: The Metal Opera I & II”) and Amanda Somerville (on “The Scarecrow”) – the man behind Avantasia, Tobias Sammet, has just announced another female vocalist for the new Avantasia double album. Her name is Cloudy Yang and Avantasia fans may be already familiar with her, as she was singing backing vocals on Avantasia tour in 2008 and her voice can also be heard in Dragonfly song (from last Edguy album “Tinnitus Sanctus”). You can find her in some videos from 2008 tour, e.g. this one.

Monday morning December 14, minus twelve degrees Celsius, one of the first really frozen days on the south of Finland this year, and first day of my little vacation. What can make one get out of his bed and set off to almost two hundred kilometres long trip to another frozen city? Legendary German guitarist Michael Schenker! Although the other members of MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP are not any second-class musicians, if one goes to MSG, the only reason is to see the guitar virtuoso Michael Schenker himself. This Helsinki concert was my premiere both with MSG and with Nosturi, a likeable club at the shore of Gulf of Finland.

Let’s mention the club first. Nosturi is a commendable venue with excellent acoustics and capacity of 900 people. Elevated side and large balcony enables more people to see something even if their height condemns them usually to get along just with sound. I arrived to Helsinki early enough to catch both MSG and the opening act for this evening, a Finnish heavy metal band called KINGS OF MODESTY. However, sightseeing, friends’ meeting etc. took me longer than I expected, thus I entered Nosturi some five minutes before the headliner showed up on the stage. My mistake, I can imagine the Kings of Modesty’s set was definitely worth seeing. The band with just one regular studio album so far has already opened for MSG earlier this year. When I entered the crowded, although not absolutely full club, last preparations just took place. It was still possible to approach the stage quite well and find a suitable place to see the band properly, but with first tones of the first song, the club was becoming tighter and tighter. No long intro, no long ceremonies, the band, followed by Schenker starting to play opening riff for Ride On My Way, comes to the stage precisely on time. After first song from the latest MSG release “In The Midst of Beauty” (2008), the setlist includes mostly songs from “The Michael Schenker Group” (1980) debut album and “M.S.G. II” (1981) disc. No mention of McAuley Schenker Group in between. Gary Barden on vocals does a great job, exactly what fans of Schenker’s old releases expect from him. Unfortunately he is not a kind of a mesmerizing frontman who attracts the audience’s attention easily. Often his appeals to the audience to sing or scream louder just go astray. Moreover, the audience seems to be somehow paralysed this evening, which does not help it in any way.

Although the atmosphere in the audience could be better, almost full venue of that size is a success. Current line-up further includes Wayne Findlay on guitar and keyboards, Chris Glen on bass and Chris Slade on drums. But, of course, their role is very limited, Schenker usurps all the attention. And not unjustly. His solos are stunning and breath-taking, especially in Lost Horizon and Attack of the Mad Axman. The crowd is staring at his fingers running over the guitar neck in disbelief. The same comes with the eccentric sounds he makes with his instrument from time to time. Several times Schenker changes one flying-V for another one. After approximately seventy minutes, MSG leaves the stage and the subsequent applause is endless. Awesome performance. Encore consists of three non-Michael Schenker Group pieces. Originally acoustic Dance Lady Gipsy from Schenker’s and Barden’s side project “Gipsy Lady” starts moving even with those who were standing still until now. The absolute end belongs to UFO’s classics Rock Bottom and Doctor Doctor. Both 35 years old and how they work! A nice surprise came when Jari Tiura (vocals in MSG 2006) joined the band for Doctor Doctor and sang the song together with Gary Barden. Another huge and not stopping applause. The whole audience sings the famous words “Livin’ lovin’ I’m on the run, so far away from you” and I can feel the atmosphere of a great gig all the rest of the night on my way back home.

Eisbrecher confirmed for RockHarz Open Air 2010

Eisbrecher, together with Therion, Ensiferum, Delain and Unzucht, are the latest confirmed acts for German festival RockHarz Open Air 2010. Next year’s version of the festival takes place on July 8-10 at the Ballenstedt Airport near Harz (middle Germany).

Previously confirmed acts include Subway To Sally, Krypteria, Doro, End Of Green, Feuerengel, Die Apocalyptischen Reiter, Mono Inc., Gernotshagen, Equilibrium, Burning Skies, Therion.

The history of the festival goes to 1993. Throughout the years it underwent several changes. Original name “Rock Gegen Rechts” was abandoned, one stage and several hours of the first year turned to two stages and three days nowadays, the venue was moved from a city hall to an airport. Last year’s line-up contained 37 bands including names like Arch Enemy, W.A.S.P., Grave Digger or Moonspell.
